In a society obsessing with marriage and filled with few who understand its virtue and value, is marriage really everything?

I don’t need to tell you about the flurry of articles everywhere about marriage this year. We are almost certainly affected by the celebrity culture and the current baby and marriage boom. Articles are appearing in their droves on why women can’t get married or why we ought to want to get married. 
Let me clarify that I’m no feminist, and far from it, as many who know me will tell you. I’m a simple traditionalist who takes my role and status from that which my faith, Islam, prescribes for me. This may be shocking to some, but that status is that my husband is the closest I should ever get to bowing in respect (something which Muslims do daily in their prayer to their Lord). For a Muslim woman, the status of her husband in her life is so high that it was said IF there were anyone other than God who a woman would have been obliged to show such a level of respect to – it would have been her husband. Many of you may suddenly think, ‘oh how typically oppressive’, and ‘unsurprisingly backwards’. Let me elaborate. I emphasise the if because the key tenet of Islam is that there is no one other than God to whom such respect is due, not even the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). A man does, however, have a great burden of responsibility to his wife and because of human psychology it is only natural that if someone willingly does everything for you, we naturally  want to offer great respect and love to this individual. Isn’t that <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvdJ9cPiJZU&amp;feature=share">what love is?</a> 
As the famous 12th Century scholar Shaykh Abdul Qadir Al-Gilani described, a husband ‘must not eat, unless his wife has already eaten’. In relation to his dependents, he must be like a trusted agent and a servant, and like a slave with his master. When it comes to eating, he must adjust his diet to suit their tastes and not oblige them to follow his own appetite&#8217;. 
Given that I am a big traditionalist and love romance, chivalry, and a gentlemanly character I almost certainly would choose marriage over being single . However, I’m not willing to be married to someone who won’t treat me as the above- for the sake of ‘being married alone’. Many people across international cultures argue regularly that we will never find our perfect man and we have to compromise. I have to admit I have wondered if I should also make such a compromise, because surely I have to get married. 
The argument from many women today is that there just aren&#8217;t enough good, suitable men. So the question is, what makes a suitable man? For many of these women, and particularly Pakistani and Gulf women I’ve seen, there is an expectation that the man has to be someone who comes from the exact same cultural background and, to some extent, even the same ‘caste’. Recently, I was in conversation with a 36-year-old Pakistani friend who said that her parents had not only expected her to marry another doctor, but deemed her suggested candidate unsuitable because he was from a different village many centuries ago! 
Now let’s just say we are open to all cultures and there simply isn’t anyone suitable: then what? What does Islam say about this? If you’ve read my <a href="http://www.the-platform.org.uk/2012/02/14/too-independent-for-marriage/">first article on marriage</a> I expound on the idea that marriage and bearing children is valued as one of the highest acts, and is a fundamental purpose of the creation of man and woman in their compatible forms.  However, as I investigated further with several Islamic scholars, what I discovered was enlightening and quite frankly something I think more women need to know, especially those from cultures who consider marriage as the ‘be all and end all’. 
Nowadays men and women are not quite what they used to be. People don’t appreciate the blessings, value and position of marriage. Men don&#8217;t realise the nature of the responsibility and position they have, and women don&#8217;t seem to realise the station of marriage. We also have the issue of <a href="http://articles.cnn.com/2010-04-20/living/census.women.advanced.degrees_1_degrees-census-bureau-asian-population?_s=PM:LIVING">women succeeding in higher education</a> and entering <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/5429181/Women-doctors-will-outnumber-men-within-a-decade-research.html">skilled professions</a> in much higher numbers, which is causing a mismatch. Some contemporary Islamic scholars now argue that in modern times the act of marriage may actually lead one to move further away from one’s faith. As many married couples will tell you marriage isn’t easy. Attending to another person and satisfying their desires while fulfilling your own duties and responsibilities can be difficult. Some argue then that these overwhelming responsibilities end up  moving your attention and focus away from the pleasure of God, which is our ultimate duty. One of my Islamic Studies teachers said to me, ‘even though my husband has always provided the best for us there are times when he does something, which really upsets me. That moment I think that it is a blessing from God, a way for me to remember Him and not preoccupy myself with my husband all the time. It reminds me that he is not infallible, and only God is worthy of that unconditional love.’ 
So let’s not fixate on marriage as the sole purpose of our existence. Yes, it has great virtues, great pleasure, great reward and benefit, but if it doesn’t happen now we ought to redirect that attention in pursuit of greater goals like continuing learning, which is an obligation upon us. Perhaps we should look at how we can develop our relationship and intimacy with our Lord because that’s our ultimate purpose. We might just earn a partner of paradise and really live happily ever after.

Marriage Is a Blessing but It Isn&#039;t Everything

In its desperation to emphasise on revenue, modern Western education stunts human capacity whilst devaluing the innate creativity and desire for knowledge that societies have historically applauded

Humanities cuts announced by the government.  Are we surprised? A reinforcement of a government committed to robbing us of our intellect. The authorities are insistent on narrowing down our abilities through increased specialisation and vocationalisation. It wants to develop incurious producers whose sole purpose is to add revenue to our economy. 
It is this contemporary thinking that leads us to compartmentalise our skills as ‘doctor&#8217; or &#8216;lawyer&#8217;, ‘artist&#8217; or ‘banker’. What happened to Polymaths? 
Definition of a polymath: a person who excels in, or is an expert in a significant number of different subject areas. The concept was coined during a period where numerous great thinkers excelled in multiple fields of arts and sciences. As the accomplished Leon Battista Alberti (1404–1472) said, &#8220;a man can do all things if he will.&#8221; 
In early Islamic civilization there was no single authority that controlled the education system. Education was, however, considered compulsory and more worthy than any form of superogatory worship. The purpose of education was to equip an individual to be an upstanding citizen, who was aware of his responsibilities to the world, society and his Lord. The Islamic view is that only through knowledge can one understand the benefits that his Lord has given him and so be in a state of obedience. 
The Prophet ﷺ who became a physician, judge, arbitrator, lawyer, healer and counselor, is the archetype. A famously quoted saying of his ﷺ is “seek education from birth to death even if it is in China” (China being an example of a distant place). Education was to be broad and cover astronomy, law, theology, poetry, science, philosophy and particularly encourage the etiquettes of learning. Taking poetry as an example, the famous scholar, Imam Al-Ghazali describes the learning of poetry as fundamental to developing the use of rhetoric, the ability to be eloquent and to speak succinctly, which in itself would develop an individual’s character. Greek, Roman and all classical education systems placed emphasis on memorising poetry for this reason. Quintillian highlights this in his educational theories where he says: 
‘there is no foundation for the complaint that only a small minority of human beings have been given the power to understand what is taught to them, the majority being so slow-witted… the greater number are quick to reason and prompt to learn. This is natural to man: as birds are born for flying… so are we for mental activity and resourcefulness.’ 
It was this system that led to the flourishing of the rational sciences in the Golden Age, subsequently reflected in the prosperity of the Islamic Empire. Mathematicians, astronomers, physicians, engineers and other kinds of scientists were abundant. The system conformed to the law of supply and demand but this was not the sole purpose of education. Education was an obligation in order to develop individual potential and was sought for itself and not for a particular job, status or position in society, which is distinctly different to today. 
Well known Polymaths who had a great impact on civilization include Ibn Sina (Avicenna) (980-1037), al-Razzi (860-940), and Husayn bin Ishak al-Ibadi, who developed the medical sciences. Razi is reported to have written 200 books on medicine, one of them on medical ethics, and the Hawi, a 25 volume practical encyclopedia. Ibn Sina became a famed physician at 18 who wrote 16 books. His corpus also includes writing on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophy">philosophy</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astronomy_in_medieval_Islam">astronomy</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alchemy_and_chemistry_in_medieval_Islam">alchemy</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geography_and_cartography_in_medieval_Islam">geology</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychology_in_medieval_Islam">psychology</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_theology">Islamic theology</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logic_in_Islamic_philosophy">logic</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathematics_in_medieval_Islam">mathematics</a>, and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physics_in_medieval_Islam">physics</a>, as well as <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_poetry">poetry</a>. 
Recent studies and discussions through platforms such as Ted have voiced concerns about our current system of education and what we value as ‘intelligence’. There is grave concern that <a href="http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/ken_robinson_says_schools_kill_creativity.html">we are killing creativity</a>. 
We are being ‘dumbed down through a serial form of programming’ as Sir Ken Robinson, a recognised leader in the development of education, creativity and innovation, describes it. In other words, &#8220;being educated.&#8221; 
In his Ted presentation, ‘Schools Kill Creativity’, he says, “we see extraordinary evidence of human creativity…all kids have tremendous talents and we squander them ruthlessly.” Picasso said, “all children are born as artists, the problem is to remain artists when we grow up.” What concerns me and should concern all of us is that we are effectively educating children out of creativity and this is being done at an institutional level. 
The most alarming statistic Sir Ken provides is from <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0962660523?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=dradowthevis-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0962660523">a study on divergent thinking</a> published in Breakpoint and Beyond. Divergent thinking is the ability to think of many answers to a specific problem. This is the first step to problem solving, before we get analytical. 98% of 1500 kindergartners scored at the genius level for divergent thinking. Their scores dropped dramatically as they progressed in the education system. This shows us two things: that we all have this innate potential and that it mostly deteriorates. We are therefore becoming ‘dumber’ and I speak from personal experience. As a child I was on track to be a polymath, scoring 99% in virtually all subjects, winning every mathematics, science, English and spelling award there was. However, as I progressed through the system I genuinely found myself losing the desire and ability to maintain this standard. I got ‘bored’ of education. 
The UK Education system is one of the most prescriptive in educating out of creativity. Students are made to select three or four subjects by A-level. I still fought this – starting with five A-levels (the old pre- 2001 A-levels) and to date I’m sure if the teachers believed that I really could be a specialist in these diverse areas (from Physics to Psychology to Electronics) – I may just have had a chance. 
Carl Djerassi, a rare polymath of today describes the UK system as a mistake. “There’ll be students here at age 16 or 17 who are much better than many Americans at French or maths or something, but abysmally ignorant in another area,” he says. “We really preach intellectual monogamy more and more in this day and age.” 
So how did we end up where we are? Modern education was coined only in the 19th Century and as a system designed to meet the needs of industrialism. It is only natural then that it will seek to develop a core type of character, one that suits the needs of the market. We are now considered commodities to fill market demands. Schools are a production line. Robinson says, “our minds have been mined the way we mine the earth for a particular commodity.” Appreciating education as a fundamental virtue, not for a means to an end but as an end in itself, has been lost. This is a distinct shift in thinking from days past. 
Thought is dangerous to the power structure of our society. Hence we are consistently distracted from it by entertainment and consumption. The education system itself naturally upholds certain subjects as more important than others. So sciences and maths are given more attention than the humanities, art and music, as subjects which are more likely to lead to economic employment. 
Even if you manage to escape and regain some shred of creativity after the attempts to institutionalise you and you decide you want to be a writer and a lawyer and an economist, society just doesn’t believe in the idea that any individual can be a polymath. We live in the age of the cult of the monomath. Knowing things makes you weird, not powerful. We have an engrained idea about our purpose and what we should all be like. Monomaths are not just the new standard, but the only realistic possibility, writing off those who wish to specialise in a number of areas as ‘dabblers’ <a href="http://moreintelligentlife.com/content/edward-carr/last-days-polymath">as described by Edward Carr of The Economist</a>. 
We need to understand the richness of human capacity. We are gifted with intellect and we must use that gift wisely. As humans we are the cause of the state of our world and the destruction and suffering we see. As Jonas Salk described: “if all the insects were to disappear from the earth then within 50 years all life on earth would end. If all human beings disappeared from the earth, within 50 years all forms of life would flourish.”

The Golden Age of the Polymath

The movie, Fetih 1453, is “insightful, epic and educational” and highly recommended by our writer. 
You wouldn’t be alone if you wondered whether or not the story of a great righteous leader, under whom all people of varying religions and races lived in peace, was just fable. In fact, having seen the movie of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HoR9_VdAXc&amp;ob=av3e">Fetih 1453</a>, you might even be forgiven for thinking these ‘Muslims’ must be a wholly fabricated people. Which Muslims today live together in peace, love, tolerance and, most importantly, within a society ruled by justice and equity to all? 
Approaching four million views on the official trailer in just over eight weeks (compare an all time classic Toy Story 3 which hit just over seven million hits in two years) Fetih 1453 has proven to be a movie not just for the Turks. In Turkey alone I have first hand information of a flood of converts to Islam as a result of the insight into Islam that Fetih 1453 provides. 
Novice acting cast aside &#8211; and be reasonable, Turkish media is still very young, although making great strides as we’ve seen from the recent <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDLm5C_P8DY&amp;feature=share">Reuters comment</a> – I thought the film, the most expensive to be made in Turkish history at a budget of USD 17m, was a beautiful recollection of the history of the conquest of Constantinople by the 21-year-old Sultan Mehmet (Turkish for ‘Muhammad’). It is a story of honesty, loyalty, faith and certainty of a righteous leader and his people. 
With regards to the factual accuracy of the film, of course, it’s a film created for a mass audience and so there are many ‘Hollywood moments’ &#8211; love stories and illicit affairs. While there is no documentary evidence of this, the non-Hollywood-esque moments are, in fact, quite accurate according to my research. 
The might of these opulently dressed armies, emperors and women almost makes you wish you lived in this time period. It wasn&#8217;t only the attire, either; the characters were so endearing that you wanted to be the daughter, wife or lover. For the men in this time loyalty was everything, and frivolity unimaginable. They are depicted as great lions who exuded strength and masculinity yet affectionate and chivalrous – a rare combination. 
At times, I wanted to leap out of my seat and run to the battlefield. One of these moments was when Sultan Fateh Mehmet led an ocean of soldiers in prayer on the battlefield and you witnessed a sea of red bow to the ground in unity &#8211; a truly moving moment. Another of these scenes was when the great hero of the movie, Hassan, was struggling for his last breath and you felt his pain. The story of Hassan is well recorded in history and the film recollected his valiance with great accuracy. 
The intensity of the battles, and the various shifts in morale and the hope, were well translated in the movie. The scenes of war were epic, powerful and slightly exhausting, particularly since I had to repeatedly shift between the English subtitles and the impressive imagery on screen, which I really didn’t want to miss for a moment. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a war film with as much glamour as Fetih 1453, but then that was the Ottoman way. 
Other great moments include the significant address by Sultan Mehmet Fateh to the Byzantine Emperor. He asks him to live with them in peace, offering them protection and a promise of no bloodshed, a profound moment for a number of reasons. Firstly, it expressed the divine instruction that the leader cannot take up war unless he has first tried to resolve the conflict in peace. It showed that this leader did not act upon his own desires or impulses and only acted according to holy guidance. I think it’s also an important moment in reflecting that Islam does not encourage war and sees it only as a last resort, contrary to popular belief. 
One major criticism which has been raised by many, is that the movie did not explain in enough detail why the Turks felt it necessary to conquer Constantinople, other than for the purpose of expanding their territory. This is a valid argument. While the movie explained that the Sultan was insistent on achieving this with his famous statement, “I will either conquer Istanbul or Istanbul will take me”, it failed to elaborate. Muslims believe that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh*) said that Constantinople would be conquered, and he who would conquered it would be a blessed man. The capture of Constantinople was crucial in justifying the existence of the Sultan. He believed his sole purpose was to spread the message of peace offered by his religion, and the only way to do this was to pass through Constantinople, which blocked the passage to Europe. Without Constantinople, he could not take this message to the people of Europe. Ultimately, he knew that once people understood the peace and serenity with which they would live, they would know this was ultimately best for them. The film, in failing to elaborate on this, perhaps makes the Ottoman Turks seem a little aggressive in their desire for war. 
The last scene does try, rather disconnectedly, to show Sultan Mehmet Fateh as a just ruler by portraying all the Byzantine Christians and Orthodox Greeks as joyful and elated, having realised the peace with which they would be allowed to live. Although having failed to fully bring the audience to sympathise with the Sultan until now, the poor acting and final cringe-worthy moment when he holds and kisses a Christian child makes this character slightly unbelievable. 
All in all, I think it was certainly worth the most expensive budget in Turkish history. Fetih 1453 tells the beautiful story of the strength of a righteous and noble leader and shows us how a great leader inspires. Great leadership is the key to every success, something we lack globally today and which has been the cause of wars and general inequity. 
I would urge everyone to go and watch this. It is insightful, epic and, at moments, emotional, but truly educational.

Fetih 1453: A Depiction of History or Fable?

An Islamic Perspective. 
On Monday evening, I was on a date with a potential suitor who had been introduced to me through family, when he said: “I just don’t see why a successful woman with as much charisma and ambition as you would want to, one; marry me, and two; move to my remote village in the Midlands.” 
I sat back, having otherwise been completely carried away with the dream of this knight in shining armour, whisking me off my feet with all the romance he could muster. I looked over at the American woman sitting next to us in the Grand Dorchester lobby, who had just interrupted our conversation to tell me that her boyfriend of 12 years dumped her on Christmas Eve – by email. In that moment I realised she represented the dilemma of women today. She was an obviously successful and beautiful 40-something U.S. corporate lawyer &#8211; very Ally McBeal &#8211; but was she content or happy? Far from it. 
I looked at my suitor and then back at her and contemplated answering him with the following line: “You’re so right. I have no need to get married just yet. I have so much more to achieve and many more places to go and people to meet.” (My new lawyer friend had just offered to set me up with some meetings in New York and I was genuinely enthused). But instead, I looked into his eyes and I’m not sure what made me say it, but I replied: “I want you to be better than that dream. I want you to make me feel like a single day with you is better than all the time in the world spent seeking out this ‘career’ and ‘success’ because we all ultimately seek success for one end goal. Happiness. And for me, there is nothing more fulfilling than a loving marriage.” 
This is the dilemma that women today are facing. They’re being sold an idea of singledom and success, evaluated by how many countries you’ve worked in and how many public achievements you have accumulated. 
There has also been an explosion of male unemployment and a steep decline in men’s life prospects that has disrupted the “romantic market.” Internationally, the number of complaints about the drought in good men – declared by successful and intelligent women no less &#8211; is endless. Increasingly, the choice is between deadbeat husbands (whose numbers are rising) and playboys (whose power is growing) as described by <a href="http://www.eparent.co.uk/2011/11/27/kate-bolick-why-marriage-is-a-declining-option-for-modern-women/">Kate Bolick in The Atlantic</a>. 
It seems the Japanese would agree. I came across <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/dec/27/japan-men-sexless-love">an article about a group of Japanese men</a> known as hikikomori (socially withdrawn boys), soshoku danshi (“herbivore” men, uninterested in sex). In a recent government study, the number of unmarried men has increased by nine percent from five years ago, with 61 percent of those unwed men reported not having a girlfriend, and 45 percent saying they couldn&#8217;t care less about finding one. &#8220;Maybe we&#8217;re just advanced human beings,&#8221; says a Japanese friend of the editor. She is an attractive, 40-something at one of Japan&#8217;s premier fashion magazines, and she is still single. &#8220;Maybe,&#8221; she adds, &#8220;we&#8217;ve learned how to service ourselves.&#8221; 
I looked back at my suitor and wondered, have I learnt to sustain myself? Is it possible that marriage is just a fad of old times and one of those institutions which has no wisdom today? 
Yet throughout the ages, marriage, as a concept, never seems to wane. In the fourth century BCE Socrates famously said: &#8220;My advice to you is to get married. If you find a good wife, you&#8217;ll be happy; if not, you&#8217;ll become a philosopher”. In the sixth century, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: ”The World is a pleasure and the best pleasure in it is the righteous partner.” And in the 18th century, Benjamin Franklin confirmed no change in this station of marriage, stating “Marriage is the most natural state of man, and the state in which you will find solid happiness.” 
Marriage in Islam is of the most highly regarded acts, so much so that it is narrated from traditional Islamic sources that there is one sin for which only marriage can expiate a person. Imam Al Ghazali, an 11th to 12th century philosopher and theologian, describes it as “a taste of Paradise.” Ghazali explains that marriage is the raison d’etre: “and He (God) created the womb and the penis, and appointed passion in man and a woman. He created the seeds of offspring in the spines and breasts of men and women; the purpose of this is not hidden from any reasonable person&#8230;”. Regardless of religious beliefs, men and women are created with specific tools, which lead to a specific purpose &#8211; that of creating a new being. It seems obvious to me that this must be my purpose. Why would anything in life be created for no reason at all? 
Shaykh Hamza Yusuf talks about this often when he says, “her natural virtues, kindness, compassion, selflessness and love predominate in men, men are able to overcome their natural vices and realise their full humanity.” I don’t think enough men realise the incredible impact a good woman can have in their lives. Many think they need to establish themselves before they marry, yet the right women often lead to the greatest of success. 
My favourite description from the Quran is where men and women are described as garments for each other (Quran 2:187). There is nothing closer to you than the clothes that you wear and that touch your skin. This is what a husband should be to me, and me to him. As such, I would feel honoured to have the opportunity to enter this union. 
Abdul Qadir Al Jilani, a 12th century Islamic scholar, sums up the role of a husband. On being a husband ‘he must not eat, unless they have already eaten. In relation to his dependents, he must be like a trusted agent and a servant, and like a slave with his master. He must carry the firm conviction that, by serving his dependents, labouring to support them, and looking after their interests, he is fulfilling the commandment of God in worshipful obedience to Him.’ 
So given my status as a woman and what I see as my fundamental role, I realise that the passion felt between a man and myself points to a higher purpose. And it is clear to me that we should act in accordance with this blessing. 
For most women the sacrifice needn’t be great. Many women can, and do, balance successful careers with great family lives and Islam doesn’t preclude that. But I wouldn’t want to take the risk of rejecting a blessing in a good man, like this man sitting opposite me, one who recognises his duties towards a wife and one who described love to me as that innate desire of wanting to care for someone in every moment. 
This was reaffirmed when he said: “Love is when, every day before you sleep, you prepare an entire pomegranate for your wife so that she can enjoy her favourite fruit without getting her hands dirty.” I knew from the moment I heard this that only a man of great character and understanding could come up with it, one who understood that his treatment of me is a higher form of worship than any supererogatory prayer. A man who takes his example from the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), a man who would look for mercy and love in his wife’s embrace, and who would sacrifice everything for a moment of her joy. Such a man is a rarity today and beats a life of having to peel your own pomegranate, hands down.
