The Platform team is made up of a group of passionate, dedicated young thinkers seeking to bring out marginalised narratives and change society for the better. If you want to offer up your talents and be a part of this hectic and rewarding project, please get in touch.

We are currently recruiting for an:

– Associate Editor
– Editorial Administrator
– Creative Assistant
– Social Media Manager
– Events and Publicity Officer
– Business Manager

The roles are unpaid as we are currently not funded, but we will support you, work around your time and open up opportunities for you where possible.

The deadline for all roles is Monday 25th July 2016 although we will be checking applications as they come in. Interviews will be held late-July to early-August.

Associate Editor

The associate editor is deputy of the section and works closely with the section editor.

The associate editor will take leadership in managing the content and development of the section, including sourcing new writers and contributions. Associate editors require impeccable language skills and need to keep up-to-date with events and news within this field.

- Britain: Formerly Politics & Society, this section explores British politics and social debates.

- Culture: Full of reviews, and some commentary, this section looks at film, literature, arts, exhibitions, theatre and food – and includes interviews and creative writing.

- Religion: Formerly Spirituality, this section presents how faith interprets society and vice versa, and how the modern world can be approached through the lens of spirituality.

- World: With a focus on insights from minority and marginalised communities, this section seeks local and international commentary about the world we live in.

Roles and responsibilities
– Keeping up to date with news and events relevant to the section
– Searching for new writers, new events and new contributions with an eye for diversity and marginalised perspectives
– Assisting and supporting section editor including covering during leave
– Working with editorial clipboard regularly
– Providing a second edit on articles as required
– Filling in relevant sections on our template
– Contributing to the social media schedule
– Posting as required
– Maintaining and updating calendar
– Getting involved in other parts of the project as and when suitable

Essential requirements
– Educated to degree level
– High level of English proficiency, including immaculate spelling and grammar
– Strong interest in current affairs and culture
– Strong teamwork and communication skills
– Strong time management and organisational skills
– Ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure
– Familiarity with The Platform’s ethos, systems and editorial standardisations
– Comfortable with conducting interviews
– Experience with WordPress is desirable

Editorial Administrator

The editorial administrator will support the editorial team with internal systems and organisational structures.

Working with the editorial team to manage our demanding level of administration, supporting and keeping the team organised.

Roles and responsibilities
– Liaising with all members of the editorial and social media teams
– Ensuring consistency and improving communication
– Maintaining and organising the writers’ database
– Assisting editors in maintaining Dropbox, GDrive and other internal systems
– Taking minutes at editorial meetings
– Sending out relevant documentation and updates to the different editorial teams
– Developing new ways to make the editorial processes more efficient

Essential requirements
– Strong organisational and time management skills
– Ability to meet tight deadlines
– Excellent Microsoft Excel proficiency
– Excellent GDrive/Gmail proficiency
– Positive can-do attitude to work and motivating personality
– Natural multi-tasker
– Confident communicator and assertive
– Strong drive to get stuck in with editorial and the work that we produce

Creative Assistant

Working with editors to develop visual content for The Platform, really changing the way The Platform looks and responding to live requirements.

These include, among other things, an interest in developing animations, visuals and posters for the website and its social media channels.

Roles and responsibilities
The Creative Assistant will organise and oversee the content and development of regular features and support website requirements.
– Keeping up-to-date with news and events
– Working closely and maintaining communication with section editors in order to promote features
– Conceiving new topics and ideas for visuals to feature on The Platform
– Responding to time-dependent assignments in a timely and organised manner

Essential Requirements
– Passionate about creative content
– Experience in creative work, particularly on computer
– Working knowledge of Photoshop is essential
– Demonstrable interest in news and current affairs
– Ability to use initiative and be self-motivated
– Strong teamwork and communication skills
– Excellent management and organisational skills
– Ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure

Social Media Manager

The social media manager has the primary responsibility of managing the content and development of The Platform’s social media channels.

Experience with a range of social media platforms is essential, including fluency and ability to maximise on social media tools such as hashtags and trends.

Roles and responsibilities
– Manage the social media team and delegate scheduling tasks accordingly, arranging timetables and effective communication between the team
– Research, develop and implement a social media strategy for The Platform working across channels such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube
– Develop and manage a social media engagement programme to increase followers and identify and build relationships with relevant online influencers
– Data analysis of our social media interactions using in-built tools on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, as well as Google Analytics in order to understand where our traffic comes from
– Work with section editors to convey priorities in our social media content and ensure all social media activity reflects article content and The Platform ethos
– Stay aware of latest digital developments and social media trends

Essential requirements
– Strong interest in current affairs, culture and news trends
– Relevant track record of running different social media channels
– Experience in live tweeting significant events
– Ability to develop a social media strategy and vision
– Data analysis experience including measuring and reporting on social media engagement
– Excellent leadership, teamwork and communication skills
– Good management, time management and organisational skills
– Attention to detail and excellent language skills
– Confidence in handling external communications and sensitive subjects
– Ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure, with consistency and flexibility
– Desirable experience with WordPress

Events and Publicity Officer

The events and publicity officer will work on publicity for The Platform to enhance participation and engagement with our work.

The publicity aspect includes creating online competitions, networking in the right areas as much as possible, and ensuring The Platform has a presence at relevant events and festivals, thereby increasing readers, followers, subscribers and attendees.

The events side will focus on developing a manageable series of organised events and meetings, both internally and externally, using a network of contacts, venues and ideas.

Roles and responsibilities
– To run social media competitions using existing resources particularly on special occasions and anniversaries
– Liaising with writers and partner organisations to enhance this outreach
– Maintaining and organising The Platform’s events calendar
– Organising internal team gatherings, as well as public events
– Lead events hosted by The Platform, including logistics and attendance drives
– Working closely with the social media team and editors to promote each publicity/events strand

– Demonstrable experience in organising small and larger scale events
– Possesses established community / political interests and networks
– Strong organisational and time management skills
– Impeccable communication and teamwork skills
– Ability to meet tight deadlines

Business Manager

The business manager has the primary responsibility of developing and implementing a fundraising strategy for The Platform, and organising the finances of the project.

Roles and responsibilities
– The business manager will complete grant applications and increase fundraising opportunities through key contacts and networks. Experience is essential.
– Create a business proposal for The Platform
– Pursue grants and opportunities
– Devise a digital advertising plan
– Work with the core team to understand The Platform’s direction
– Organise project finances and team expenses in a meticulous and organised manner

– A relevant degree
– Passion for youth work and online media
– Excellent organisational skills
– Attention to detail and excellent language skills
– Demonstrable experience with writing proposals and business plans
– Relevant track record of raising generating income
– Ability to develop a business strategy and vision
– Confidence in handling external communications and sensitive subjects
– Demonstrable interest in building brands from scratch
– Ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure, with consistency and flexibility
