As a white English guy who is researching secularism and constitutionalism in Fiji, this connected with me on many levels. Thank you for sharing. I sincerely hope Britain will wake from the ugly path its walking down, and take stock of what its losing. Effectively, its soul.
Here in NZ, I thought maybe the liberal press – dismayed with the choice of Brexit – was exaggerating this summer’s xenophobic turn. That’s clearly not the case. Some very ignorant and spiteful voices have claimed ownership and felt empowered from this vote. Its national disgrace and personally, I feel ashamed.
Tying this to the Rewa case, you may know that a lot of the wonderfully important stuff that’s unfolded has come from the academic work of a young Indo-Fijian, USP, female scholar, Shashi Kiran. Its often the voices irrationally pushed to the margins that we most need to hear. As its those voices that have the most valuable and original things to say. So, please keep writing!!
