Khan says, “If you’re not convinced of its importance, watch this impressive testimonial from the Wikimedia Foundation of how significant Wikipedia has been for one particular Muslim editor.”
Is this journalism of some sort, because I don’t recognize it as such. In order to “convince” the reader of Wikipedia’s importance, we are to observe one data point that has been polished up and presented by the paid owner and operator of the site in question?
Let me try this, it sounds fun!
January 2001: “If you’re not convinced of its success, read this impressive annual report from Enron that details how significant their energy trading system has been for shareholders.”
October 1976: “If you’re not convinced of its safety, watch this impressive television commercial from Ford Motor Company about how significant the Pinto’s engineering has been for motorists.”
17 May 2010: “If you’re concerned about the oil spill from the Deepwater Horizon accident, watch this impressive commentary from BP executive Tony Hayward, where he says the spill is ‘very very modest’ and ‘relatively tiny’.”
Hooray for this new breed of journalism, where the writer merely needs to regurgitate the PR pablum of the entity being written about!
