Hurricane Sandy leaves devastation and loss in its wake
In the past week, Hurricane Sandy, a tropical storm that formed over the Atlantic, wreaked havoc and destruction across the Caribbean and the Northeastern coast of the US.
Haiti suffered 54 deaths with 21 individuals missing, while the loss of life in other affected regions of the Caribbean amounted to a total of 18 people. While Sandy’s impact was felt strongly in this region, international media has largely focussed on the subsequent affects in North America, with Haiti and other damaged regions suffering neglect in coverage.
Upon arrival in North America, the storm combined with a cold front to form a superstorm, and left at least 90 dead, millions without electricity and $50 billion worth of damage. With winds spanning 1,100 miles the storm was the largest on record in diameter, its reach extending as far as the Southeastern and Midwestern states of the US, as well as Canada.
As Hurricane Sandy raged and in its wake, many images captured the devastation wreaked by this record-breaking storm.
