The economic argument is a valid one when it comes to proving why foreign language knowledge is important.
I gave an interview last week on the BBC about why the UK loses $11-26 billion a year because there aren’t enough foreign language speakers to service international markets. I explained that people residing in English speaking countries rarely hear foreign language songs or see foreign language media so it’s difficult for them to make out the sounds in foreign languages when they begin learning.
